Some tips for replacing an air filter. Maintaining a motorcycle air filter.Riding with a clogged filter is like running with a blocked nose... The air filter plays a major role in the health, fuel consumption, and “breathing” of your bike. It prevents impurities from entering your engine while ensuring the best possible airflow.
The cleaner it is, the more efficient it is. A motorcycle air filter’s lifespan can vary greatly depending on whether it is properly maintained. The procedure is not the same for foam and paper air filters, but in both cases your engine will benefit. Cleaning paper or foam air filters.
Cleaning a paper air filter. For paper air filters, dry cleaning is recommended.Start by gently spreading the pleats and use a vacuum cleaner to remove the bulk of the dirt. Continue with a brush, but not too stiff, so as not to damage the paper structure. If you have an air compressor, a good blast of air combined with the brush will be even more effective. (Direct the air flow from the inside to the outside of the filter so that impurities are pushed out rather than driven in)(and vice versa, of course, when vacuuming).
Important: paper filters must not be coated with oil because they work dry, and oil would only clog them further. Cleaning a foam air filter. For foam air filters, avoid white spirit and gasoline, which damage the cells. Clean it twice with dishwashing liquid and lukewarm water, rinsing thoroughly each time.
To squeeze it out, press it, but do not twist it (again, to preserve the foam). When it is completely dry, naturally, no hair dryer or radiator! Put it in a plastic bag with filter oil and knead it. Then, once it is well soaked and drained, apply grease again to the contact surface with the airbox and reinstall it. (For motocross/enduro use, expect to replace it every eight to ten washes).
The average lifespan of an air filter varies depending on its type, use, and maintenance. For a paper air filter, it ranges from 5,000 to 12,000 km depending on use. For a foam air filter (off-road motorcycles), it can last up to 45,000/50,000 km. Contrary to popular belief, riding in the city does not spare the air filter. It gets much dirtier in polluted environments than in the countryside. Of course, for motocross or enduro use, it is a different story. In that case, it is strongly recommended to wash it after every ride. A motorcycle air filter’s lifespan can vary greatly depending on whether it is well maintained or not. To check whether your air filter is still usable, hold it up to bright light and see whether light passes through it. If light still does not pass through, you need to replace it. Finally, if you really have any doubt about its condition, remember that given the importance of the air filter, it is much better to replace it a little too early than a little too late. Replacing a motorcycle air filter is fairly straightforward. In most cases, the filter is located in an airbox, usually behind the carburetors, under the fuel tank, or under the seat. During disassembly/reassembly, you can take the opportunity to wipe and vacuum any dirt that may have accumulated in the airbox itself, and to drain it by opening the end of the small hose that sometimes comes out from the bottom.Make sure the new filter is properly sealed, both by fitting it correctly during reassembly and, when it is a motocross filter, by applying grease to the contact surface to prevent dust and other impurities from entering the engine by slipping under the air filter. Do not use gasoline or white spirit.
Never reinstall a wet filter (it could send water into the engine). Do not twist a foam filter to squeeze it out (press it only).Do not put oil on a paper filter (only on foam and K&N filters). Remember to collect used oil in a container and take it to a recycling center or garage, rather than pouring it into the water system.
